Leading With Purpose On Purpose
As a former middle school teacher in a Title I school, a labor leader, a school board member, a parent—and not to mention a former student—I’ve experienced systemic inequities in education from a variety of vantage points. I’ve seen firsthand the challenges that students, educators, and families face—and I’ve also seen the power of collective action. That’s why I’ve dedicated my career to partnering with students, fellow educators, administrators, and community members to take action and be the difference that makes the difference.
Hello there! I’m Dr. Taunya Jaco—an educator, advocate, and consultant passionate about reimagining education to center justice, equity, and community. With over a decade of experience in K-12 and higher education, I’ve worked to challenge systemic barriers, uplift historically marginalized voices, and create meaningful learning experiences that empower students, educators, and community members alike.
My journey has taken me from the classroom to policy spaces, boardrooms, and national stages. As a statewide education director, I’ve led regional organizing efforts, designed equity-driven training programs, and helped shape policies that create more inclusive schools. As a consultant, I collaborate with school districts to develop culturally responsive curricula, facilitate professional development, and leverage digital tools to make learning more engaging and accessible.
At my core, I’m an educator and storyteller. I’ve taught courses on critical education policy, mentored graduate students, and conducted research focused on building a statewide TK-12 Ethnic Studies model curriculum—using documentary filmmaking as a tool for advocacy. My work has been featured in the Journal of Asian American Studies, and my film, Fidelity at the Forefront: The Fight for Ethnic Studies, has become a resource for educators and policymakers nationwide.
I’ve had the privilege of presenting at global conferences, including the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference and the Worldwide Forum on Education & Culture, sharing insights on equity, leadership, and systemic change. I also served as a school board trustee and a National Education Association Board Director, always working to push policies that truly serve all students.
At the heart of it all, I believe education should be liberatory, joyful, and transformative. I’m here to build, disrupt, and dream alongside those who want to make learning spaces more just, inclusive, and empowering. I’m ready to transform when you are … LET’S GO!
